Are individual or unisex bathrooms better for transgender people than segregated ones?

Recently, I was asked the question: Are individual or unisex bathrooms better for transgender people than segregated ones? I found this to be an interesting topic and one that is often discussed in the media, here’s my thoughts:

Providing individual or unisex bathrooms, on one hand, do provide transgender people with more options. It can help make transgender individuals feel safer than using binary toilets, where they may face discrimination. It also gives options for people with children or disabilities having the option to use a unisex bathroom. However, segregating people based on their sexuality or gender also leads to problems. Trans people should not be singled out and forced to use a particular restroom. They should be able to choose the bathroom to which they identify and feel most comfortable using.

In the UK, there is no law stating males can only use male facilities and women only allowed to use female facilities. The Equality Act, helps protect transgender individuals. As for example, transgender females may feel uncomfortable using male bathrooms and being forced to use these bathrooms could put them at risk, it is much more likely they could be abused or attacked. Under UK law any woman who self-identifies as a woman can use female only facilities such as changing rooms and bathrooms. Changes like this mean more acceptance for transgender people.

However, this has not always been the case, over in Tennessee not too long ago in 2012, Richard Floyd (state representative) proposed laws to stop trans people using the bathroom of their choice. He proposed a fine of $50 for any trans person not using the restroom of their birth gender.

The world still has a long way to go in terms of acceptance, but small changes are happening which are enabling equality and freedom in the LGBT+ community.
